Monitoring Diabetes — New monitor tracks blood sugars from afar

It is 2012 and technology still multiplies more than the mosquitoes around water in the summertime.  Medtronics has hit the mark again in gaining approval to sell a new device that lets caregivers monitor blood sugars from afar.  The device, called the mySentry monitor works in tandem with insulin pumps and a continuous glucose monitor to aid parents with the task of monitoring diabetes.

Much like a baby monitor, the mySentry monitor sits in the diabetic’s room and relays information wirelessly.  An alarm notifies the caregiver of low blood sugars with plenty of time for them to take care of the issue.  Picture this—my sister gets up at least two times throughout the night; usually at 2:00 a.m. and at 6:00 a.m. to check my niece’s blood sugar levels.  If she is low, she must decide the best form of sugar for her.  Many parents struggle with this because their child, especially if they have a young child, cannot wake up to eat or drink.  They could choke on glucose pills.  Juice seems to work best if your child can wake up enough to drink some.

Having an alarm which serves as a trigger to low blood sugars gives parents the peace of mind during the night.  That precious sleep is needed for parents.
