Using the Bolus Wizard to Monitor Glucose

Going from giving insulin through shots to using the insulin meter was one of the best decisions made in our family.  The glucose meter eliminates the need for administering shots throughout the day.  It gives the diabetic better control over blood sugar levels.  In addition to having the meter aid in diabetes control, individuals can use the Bolus Wizard to calculate the amount of insulin you should take with the push of a few buttons.  Before using the wizard, you should have your diabetes nurse help you determine how many units to set as a dose in relation to your carbohydrate intake.  After setting up your wizard, you wizard will be able to calculate units needed.

Most diabetics have an idea of how many units they need to set as a dose with regards to how many carbohydrates they are about to eat.  Every diabetic is different, but my niece measures carbohydrates in units of 10 grams.  So, if she eats a sandwich of 40 grams of carbohydrates, she would need 4 units.

Using the Bolus Wizard is easy.  Watch the video below for step by step instructions on how to use the Bolus Wizard with the Medtronic MiniMed Insulin Pump.
